How Bookkeepers Get Client Testimonials That Attract Better Clients

Bookkeeping is a high-trust service. Small business owners are handing you access to their financial data, their bank accounts, and their peace of mind. Before they hire you, they want to know: Is this person reliable? Have they helped businesses like mine?

Testimonials answer those questions directly. And yet most bookkeepers have zero testimonials displayed anywhere.

Here’s how to fix that.

Why Bookkeeper Testimonials Work

Your potential clients are often stressed about their finances — behind on reconciliations, dreading tax season, unsure if their numbers are right. A testimonial that says “I was a mess before I hired her — now I always know where I stand financially” speaks directly to that anxiety.

The testimonial isn’t about accounting features. It’s about relief.

When to Ask

After tax season — your client just survived tax prep without stress because of you. Ask now.

After cleaning up a backlog — if a client came to you with 6 months of un-reconciled books and you fixed it, ask when the work is done.

At the 6-month mark — client has experienced the full rhythm of working with you.

When a client says “I don’t know what I’d do without you” — that’s your cue. Ask immediately.

Scripts for Bookkeepers

Post-tax season email:

Subject: How did tax season feel this year?

Hi [Name],

Now that tax season is in the rearview mirror, I’d love to hear how you felt about this year vs. before. If you’re willing to share a few words about working together, it genuinely helps me find more great clients like you. Here’s a quick link: [link]

Thank you, [Your name]

After a cleanup project:

“I’m so glad your books are caught up — that must be a relief! Would you be willing to leave a short testimonial about the process? It would mean a lot. [link]“

What a Great Bookkeeping Testimonial Looks Like

Weak: “Great bookkeeper, very accurate.”

Strong: “I was 8 months behind on my books and dreading my accountant’s call. [Bookkeeper] came in, caught up everything in two weeks, found $3,400 I’d miscategorized as expenses, and set up a system so it never happens again. Tax season this year was the first one in 5 years where I wasn’t panicking. Worth every penny.”

That’s specific, it shows problem + solution + dollar impact, and it speaks to the emotional experience. That’s what books new clients.

Confidentiality

Some clients are sensitive about their financial situation being mentioned publicly. Offer options:

  • Anonymous: “Small business owner, restaurant industry”
  • No financial specifics: “She caught errors I didn’t even know existed”
  • First name + business type only

Where to Display Bookkeeping Testimonials

  • Your website homepage — lead with the relief/peace of mind angle
  • Google Business Profile — critical for local search (“bookkeeper near me”)
  • LinkedIn — recommendations from named business owners
  • Proposal decks — include 2-3 testimonials from similar industries
