Tax preparation is a relationship business. Clients who trust you return year after year, refer their family members, and don’t shop around when you raise your rates.
And yet most tax professionals put almost no effort into collecting reviews. The ones who do create an enormous competitive advantage — especially with first-time clients who have no relationship yet and are making a cold decision.
Who Is Searching
- Individuals who switched jobs or had major life changes (marriage, divorce, new home)
- Small business owners who outgrew TurboTax
- Freelancers and gig workers navigating self-employment taxes
- Retirees with complex investment income
- Immigrants navigating US tax requirements for the first time
- People who made a mistake on a prior return and need help
When to Ask
After the return is filed:
“Your return is filed and you’re all set. If the process was smooth and you felt taken care of, I’d really appreciate a quick Google review — it helps people who are looking for the same kind of personalized service find us: [link]”
After a refund arrives:
“Great news — your refund hit! If working with us this year was a good experience, this is a perfect time for a Google review: [link]”
After resolving an IRS issue:
“The matter is fully resolved. I know that was stressful. If I was able to take that weight off your shoulders, sharing your experience would mean a great deal to other people going through the same thing: [link]“
What a Strong Tax Preparer Review Looks Like
“I’d been doing my own taxes for 15 years and finally handed them off when things got complicated. [Name] found a deduction I’d been missing for 6 years on my home office. The refund covered her fee twice over. She explained everything clearly and answered every question I asked. I’m never going back to doing them myself.”
Strong elements: specific scenario, tangible financial outcome, educational value, fee-to-value comparison, and long-term commitment.
IRS Issue / Audit Reviews
If you do representation or IRS resolution work:
“I got an IRS audit notice and panicked. [Name] took over the entire communication with the IRS. I didn’t have to talk to anyone or send anything directly. Six weeks later, we owed $0 and the audit was closed. I’ve recommended her to everyone I know who’s ever been scared of the IRS.”
These reviews are extremely powerful and extremely rare — ask for them.
